This is a study on the conscious and unconscious aspects of phobic manifestations by 4-to-10-year-old children assisted at the Children’s Dental Clinic of the Dentistry Undergraduate Program of Franca University. It also aimed at identifying management strategies used by professors and trainees as well as at collaborating with the performance of dental pediatricians in dealing with the difficult situations reported in relation to the subject. Psychoanalysis and Linguistics were used as the theoretical framework. It was concluded that when a child fears dental treatment, such treatment becomes viable with proper management by the dentist. When phobic manifestations are present, adherence to treatment by the child is only possible if psychoanalytic treatment is associated.
