To clinically investigate aspects of the personality of 30 patients from the Outpatient Clinic of the Colon, Rectum and Anus Surgery Service of the Surgical Clinic Division II of the Hospital das Clínicas of the Medical School of the University of São Paulo submitted to radiochemotherapy as the first approach to the treatment of cancer of the distal rectum, we used a psychodynamic based psychological technique. Some patients were not operated on, others underwent surgery with or without definitive colostomy, being continuously treated for at least three years. It was verified that the three subgroups present similar emotional conditions although the male patients have revealed better conditions of mourning elaboration for the losses caused by the disease.
