Objective: This study aimed to analyze the puerperas’ perception about the care received during the birth process in a public maternity ward in Feira de Santana, Bahia. Methods: This is a qualitative descriptive exploratory study that complied with the Resolution 196/96 of the National Health Council and was made in the period from February to April 2010, through semi-structured interviews with nineteen puerperas. Results: The content analysis showed that the puerperas were subjected to conducts that impact the development of labor. She sought hospital care with the progress of the signs of labor, to ease the suffering in the setting of obstetric space. Conclusion: The mothers tend to stay alone, being subjected to conduct detrimental to the evolution of the labor, which reveals the lack of humanization and the absence of ties of co-responsibility.
