The present research aims to investigate psychoanalytically the emotional experience of mothers of children diagnosed as obese, justifying itself insofar as the treatment of the condition, which includes psychological attention, implies an important maternal participation. The work is organized as a case study of the mother of an obese child under treatment. The clinical material presented corresponds to two transferential narratives, related to the participant’s life history and to the individual interview, which includes her manifestations produced in response to the Thematic Story-Drawing Procedure. The psychoanalytic consideration of this material allowed the interpretative production of two emotional affective fields of meaning: I am the mother of a boy, therefore I exist, and My mother loves me, therefore I exist. It is thus demonstrated that the maternal emotional experience, in the case studied, is strongly marked by basic subjective difficulties, linked to processes of constitution of the self, which probably affects the psychological care of the child. This finding indicates that it is possible that childhood obesity is a symptomatic expression of complex family configurations, of trans-generational character.
