Considering the changes that retirement and the work environment are undergoing, the subjective dimension of the process of retirement at middle-age is the theme of this research. The purpose is to investigate how the middle aged woman worker feels the approach of retirement and what her life expectations are through qualitative methodology. This research uses five study-cases of women who have high levels of professional qualifications. They are representative groups of Brazilian women who have entered the workforce in the past 30 years when access during that time was difficult. This study analysis is based upon interviews and Drawing-and-Story Procedure as a technique of clinical personality investigation, which in itself is based on theoretical fundamentais of the Analytical Psychology. It finds that with the approach of professional identity loss, due to retirement, reactivates shadow symbols which can be integrated into consciousness, as well as, transformational archetypes which determine the way mid-life changes are faced. This research shows that approaching retirement propitiation a re-definition and re-orientation in these women’ s lives, and that the Programs of Retirement Preparation should work on psychological aspects shown during this life transition, and then promoting favorable conditions for the continuity of the individuation processo.
