The author shares the experience of trips made to the region of São Gabriel da Cachoeira (North of the State of Amazon) in the condition of a social clinical psychologist. She describes her contacts with youths, families, and communities, most of which were composed by Indians from many different ethnicities, all of them in an accelerated process of acculturation. She describes these encounters, interviews, and the use of graphic expression techniques, such as the Thematic Drawing-and-Story Procedure, as co-mediators in group therapy appointments. In this account, the author describes her experiences with individual sessions and reflections about the episodes: the rich experience of people living in that area, especially their suffering as a possible result of a situation of intense uprootedness and exclusion. These reflections indicate the necessity of developing new psychological practices.
